EMBRC-Belgium researchers from Universiteit Gent, the Flanders Marine Institute, and the Institute of Natural Sciences joined colleagues from across Europe last week for the third edition of the EMBRC Science Days, hosted in Gran Canaria. The biannual gathering brought together representatives from all ten EMBRC member countries for a week dedicated to scientific exchange, collaboration, and forward-looking discussions on the future of marine research infrastructures.
The programme offered a rich mix of scientific insights, hands‑on learning opportunities, and community-building moments. A visit to the Spanish Bank of Algae (BEA) provided participants with a closer look at its extensive microalgae collections and the innovative research they support. A keynote session on the Marine Station of the Future, given by Neil Davies, invited attendees to reflect on how marine research infrastructures can evolve to meet emerging scientific and societal needs.
Throughout the week, working group sessions on Aquaculture, In-situ test sites, Mesocosms and Biological Resources allowed participants to align on shared priorities and strengthen ongoing collaborations across the EMBRC network. A dynamic World Café format encouraged open dialogue, enabling colleagues to exchange ideas, identify challenges, and explore new avenues for joint initiatives. Social activities rounded out the programme, reinforcing the strong sense of community that underpins EMBRC’s mission.
The EMBRC-Belgium delegation returned home with new connections, renewed motivation, and a wealth of ideas to bring into future work.
EMBRC-Belgium extends its thanks to the organisers and all participating colleagues for an inspiring and productive week—one that once again highlighted the value of an engaged and collaborative international research community.
